Air Travel to Lisbon

Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (IATA: LIS), commonly known as Lisbon Airport, is the main international gateway to the city and is located just 7 km (4 miles) from the city center. Travelers can reach downtown via the Red Line metro in about 20 minutes, or by taxi, Uber, or Bolt in 15–20 minutes, with fares ranging from €10 to €20 depending on traffic. The Aerobus airport shuttle, which serves key downtown stops, is temporarily paused in 2025, so it’s best to check its status before traveling.

Lisbon has an efficient and affordable public transport system. The metro has 4 color-coded lines; trains run from 6:30 AM to 1:00 AM. It is ideal for getting around the city quickly and cheaply.

Operated by Carris, buses and historic trams (like Tram 28) are iconic but can be crowded. Buses cover neighborhoods not served by the metro.

The Viva Viagem card is a reusable card for metro, bus, and train. It costs €0.50 (rechargeable), and daily passes are available for approximately €6.80 for unlimited 24h rides.

Commuter trains are useful for day trips to Sintra, Cascais, and Estoril. They are operated by CP – Comboios de Portugal.

National rail links connect Lisbon to Porto, Faro, Coimbra, and Madrid via high-speed or intercity trains.

Lisbon is increasingly bike-friendly, though it has many hills. Bike rentals and e-bike stations (e.g., Gira) are available. Dedicated bike lanes exist, especially along the riverfront and in flat districts like Belém. Helmets are not mandatory but recommended.

Portugal uses the Euro (€) as its official currency. While cash is accepted, card payments—particularly Visa and Mastercard—are widely used, even for small transactions. ATMs are readily available and typically support international cards. When using a card, it’s best to avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) and opt to be charged in euros instead.

Pharmacies (Farmácias) are widely accessible and typically operate from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., although some are open 24 hours on a rotating basis. Travelers should bring an adequate supply of any personal prescription medications, along with the prescriptions and generic names for customs clearance or in case replacements are needed. Common over-the-counter medicines for conditions like colds and allergies are available, but stronger medications will require a prescription.

Portugal uses Type C and Type F power outlets, which follow the European standard, with a voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Travelers from the US, UK, or Canada will need a plug adapter and may also require a voltage converter if their devices are not compatible with dual voltage.
